A few days after Daphne and I dropped the rest of my Momâs things off at the charity shop, I went to downtown Royal Oak to Cat and Gregâs office to finalize a few things with them about the house. It was another gorgeous summer day, hot and sunny, and I couldnât help but have a smile on my face. Things with Daphne had been going great, and I really felt like my life was on an upward trajectory. There were a few things I still had yet to deal with, but with Daphne in my corner I was feeling confident. I was feeling like things were going my way.
The realty office was clean and modern, in a small storefront off of a side street. The color scheme inside was gray and blue, and it all looked very professional. Stuck to the front window were advertisements of local listings, and when I entered the office it was quiet but for the low hum of the air conditioner.
There were five desks in the office, and from one of the desks in the back I saw Cat stand up. She beamed happily at me, stepped around her desk, and excitedly came my way. I smiled in return, and continued my approach.
âMissy!â Cat exclaimed with bubbling joy. âItâs so great to see you.â
âYou too, Cat,â I replied. We hugged.
âCome with me,â she beckoned, waving me along. âI have just a few things for you to sign and we should be good to go.â
âSure thing.â
I followed Cat back to her desk, and I sat down opposite her. She immediately buried herself in her computer screen. Her desk was immaculately clean and organized, much more than the four other desks in the office. I looked around at the empty office and then I made my thoughts known out loud.
âJust you today, huh?â
âHmm?â Cat responded, looking up from her computer and back to me.
âThe office is empty,â I prodded.
âOh yeah,â Cat said, waving it off. âTheyâre all out with clients, doing showings, making deals.â
âHowâs Greg?â
âHeâs great,â she said. âJust great. Here we go. This is the agreement. Let me print it out.â
Cat clicked her mouse and within seconds the printer behind her began to hum. Within a few quick moments, paper started to stream out of the printer. Then it all stopped, the printer powered down, and Cat popped up to retrieve the paperwork.
âHere we go,â said Cat, placing the paperwork in front of me. âBoilerplate stuff, really. This is just an agreement to use us as your listing agent, an explanation of our fees, that sort of thing. Feel free to read over it.â
âThanks,â I conferred, taking the paperwork from Cat as she then sat back down in her chair with a bemused smile. I started skimming the agreement, but most of the wording was convoluted legalese. After a moment, I looked back up.
âOh, sorry,â said Cat. She handed me a pen. I smiled and accepted it.
âThanks,â I said. âThatâs exactly what I needed.
